Surf: the priority rules

Surfing has unwritten rules that every surfer must respect. These priority rules exist for safety and to ensure everyone gets their share of waves. Breaking them leads to dangerous collisions and conflicts in the water.

The Golden Rules

1. The Surfer Closest to the Peak Has Priority

  • The peak is where the wave breaks first

  • Whoever is deepest (closest to the curl) has the right of way

  • If someone is already up and riding, the wave is theirs

2. Don't Drop In

  • Dropping in = catching a wave someone is already riding

  • This is the most common and dangerous offense

  • Always look both ways before taking off

3. Don't Snake

  • Snaking = paddling around someone to get priority

  • Wait your turn in the lineup

  • Respect the rotation

4. Paddling Surfer Yields to Riding Surfer

  • When paddling out, avoid the surfer riding the wave

  • Go behind them, not in front

  • If unavoidable, paddle toward the whitewater

5. Don't Hog Waves

  • Let others catch waves too

  • Share the stoke

  • One wave at a time, then rotate

At the Takeoff Zone

  • Wait your turn: There's an informal queue

  • Communicate: Call "left" or "right" on A-frame peaks

  • Respect locals: They surf there every day

Safety Priorities

⚠️ Never let go of your board in a crowd

⚠️ Look before you take off

⚠️ Kick out safely away from others

⚠️ Help a surfer in trouble

When Two Surfers Have Equal Position

  • A-frame peak: One goes left, one goes right

  • Same side: Communicate or back off

  • In doubt: Let the other surfer go
